Do Pilates during pregnancy: support your body and your baby!

Pilates has conquered the world in recent years. There must be a reason for such success: many of the varied exercises can have a positive effect on well-being during pregnancy. Pilates helps, among other things, to combat everyday stress symptoms such as back pain. Pilates training during pregnancy is gentler than usual - you still move and mobilize your whole body while at the same time promoting your cognitive abilities.

The Pilates relaxation exercises not only help you, but also your baby, with which you can relieve tension and thus improve your general well-being. In our Pilates course in Zurich we would like to offer you the appropriate private session or group training.

Benefits of Pilates for Pregnant Women

The growing child brings a lot of joy, but especially demands a lot from the expectant mother with her changing body. For example, the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles are put under a lot of strain until birth. The growing and increasingly heavy stomach naturally also affects your entire posture. Pilates offers many benefits for these and similar discomforts:

  • Targeted breathing and relaxation techniques contribute to an increased feeling of well-being. Pilates during pregnancy aims at conscious relaxation of the body and is dedicated to the efficiency of breathing. Targeted Pilates exercise brings benefits for your physical and mental well-being.

  • We consciously strengthen the upper body while working out with Pilates during pregnancy in order to optimally prepare it for carrying and breastfeeding the child.

  • The active-dynamic exercises for the pelvic floor will give you a better understanding of it. Such exercises include, among other things, consciously contracting your pelvic floor, holding it and relaxing it again.

  • In general, Pilates fosters body perception. At the same time, attention is, of course, paid to the correct execution of the corresponding movement sequences. These points alone help with many problems, for example in the stomach and back that often stem from pregnancy.

  • The physical changes and the associated stress often also affect the posture of the pregnant woman. Pilates offers a range of mobilization, stretching and strengthening exercises that can ideally counteract these issues.

What should you pay attention to when doing Pilates during pregnancy?

Pilates during pregnancy is a very gentle workout: slow movements, conscious breathing, controlled strength training, stretching. As a pregnant woman, you should not start Pilates without guidance. Because there are Pilates exercises that you should avoid during pregnancy.

For example, strength exercises that affect the abdominal muscles lead to the shortening of the abdominal wall - very disadvantageous with a constantly growing stomach. As pregnancy progresses, Pilates can become very uncomfortable for the pregnant woman if it is performed on the back, stomach or side. Be sure to listen to your own body feeling!
